DIY Solar Panel – Solar Water Heating Installation – Part 4.
Solar Collector Chassis Mounting
Collector Chassis Bolting Holes
Place the collector chassis in the chosen position.
Mark the roof tiles through the mounting holes, move the collector chassis clear and secure.
Using the 10mm core drill cut the fixing holes through the tiles, water lubrication helps cutting.
To start a core drill approach the tiles at about 45°, start cutting and then rotate to perpendicular to drill through.
Drill through the felt using the 8mm auger bit.
Adding Mounting Points Inside The Roof
Locate the holes through the felt and fit the 2”x3” timber over the holes and between the roof frames.
Drill through the roof frames diameter 6mm and fix the 2”x3” using the 6×80mm screws and glue.
If a hole is close to a roof frame a block of 2”x3” can be fitted to the side of the roof frame.
If the hole comes through the roof frame use the hole to bolt directly to the roof frame.
Bolting The Collector Chassis Down
From the outside drill through the 2”x3” perpendicular to the roof using the 8mm auger bit.
Re-position the collector chassis and secure.
Tap the long M8 coach bolts through from the outside.
Fit a M8 nut and large washers and tighten taking care not to bend the collector frame.
Fit a second M8 nut and lock the nuts against each other.
Alternative methods such as straps under the tiles can be used.
